Two of the most spectacular and visited of the templesto survive from Ancient Egypt are the temples of Dendera and Edfu. In this course we will take a guided tour of these iconic monuments. We will explore not only the architecture, but the extensive reliefs carved on the walls and ceilings. We will discuss these intricate scenes and find them a window into ancient Egyptian belief and thought. We will explore each temple complex to find the connection between these two particular temples. Any by exploring the mythology of two of the most important deities in the Egyptian pantheon, we will appreciate the significance of Horus of Edfu and Hathor of Dendera.

Lucia Gahlin

Lucia Gahlin is an Honorary Research Associate at UCL’s Institute of Archaeology, teaches Egyptology for the University of Exeter, and lectures widely throughout the country. She has worked extensively in the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology in London, and has been Registrar for Barry Kemp’s archaeological expedition at Tell el Amarna in Middle Egypt. She leads tours to Egypt, and her publications include Egypt. Gods, Myths and Religion (Anness, 2001), and chapters in The Egyptian World (ed. Toby Wilkinson, Routledge, 2007). She is Chair of the Friends of the Petrie Museum, Deputy Director of Bloomsbury Summer School, and an accredited NADFAS lecturer.
