Somerset offers us fascinating clues about the lives of our forebears. The county is rich in Romano-British cemeteries and Christian villa sites, which show us how the Celtic church evolved. Somerset contains early monastic sites too, at Street, Glastonbury and elsewhere. Some twenty sites will be considered during the morning. In the afternoon, we will focus on sites further afield, and end by exploring some Celtic poetry.

In its commitment to the arts and to broader and even peripheral aspects of culture, Dillington House is a beacon of enlightenment in a world of increasing sameness, mediocrity and uncritical acceptance. And there is much to be said for the home cooking too. I unhesitatingly commend it to all who are still intellectually alert. Brian Sewell
