An introduction to the architecture, history and symbolism of English parish churches, showing how they came to look the way they do. This course explains how changes in religious outlook transformed church design and tells intriguing stories about how churches were used – how people played ball games in the aisles and why the parish priest of one church locked the bell ringers out of the tower.

Philip Wilkinson

Philip Wilkinson is the author of many books on architecture and history. He wrote a series of books to accompany the BBC2's series Restoration and Restoration Village, and is the author of The English Buildings Book (published by English Heritage) and Fifty Architecture Ideas You Really Need To Know (Quercus). When not writing, he explores buildings ceaselessly, recording some of his discoveries on his blog ( and gives talks on architectural subjects.
