Why do many houses have so few corridors? And why is the dining room often so far from the kitchen? This introduction to country house architecture features some of England’s most glamorous buildings – and will help you unravel some of their enigmas.

Philip Wilkinson

Philip Wilkinson is the author of many books on architecture and history. He wrote a series of books to accompany the BBC2's series Restoration and Restoration Village, and is the author of The English Buildings Book (published by English Heritage) and Fifty Architecture Ideas You Really Need To Know (Quercus). When not writing, he explores buildings ceaselessly, recording some of his discoveries on his blog (englishbuildings.blogspot.co.uk) and gives talks on architectural subjects.
