Start Time: 2.30pm
End Time: 4.30pm

Historian James Evans looks at the remarkable life and times of William Penn: a genuine apostle – more so than those who sailed on the Mayflower – for American freedon. Penn was a Quaker emigrant who founded the state of Pennysylvania. Although his father was frustrated and enraged, he could not conceal the admiration that he felt for his son. And nor should we. His ideas were astonishing, and astonishingly modern. Penn faced numerous tragedies and struggles but has left a massive and profoundly admirable legacy.

Includes tea and cake after the lecture.

I thoroughly enjoyed the two times that I've come to speak at Dillington House. I found the audiences to be engaged, receptive and welcoming. Somerset needs a venue like this, I hope it goes from strength to strength and I'd love to come back and speak again. Gavin Pretor-Pinney
