Join us for a weekend exploring the countless aspects of one of Europe's great rivers. Starting in the hills of the Province of Soria‚ it flows across the Iberian Peninsula and enters Portugal as the Douro‚ eventually meeting the sea at the great city of Oporto.
Our virtual journey takes us across the majestic Meseta of Old Castile‚ through the cities of Soria‚ Valladolid and Zamora (ancient cities inextricably involved with the History and Culture of Spain) and on to Oporto. The Duero is the river of great wines (especially Port and Ribera del Duero‚ among Spain's finest)‚ it is the river of El Cid‚ of the medieval battles between Moors and Christians. It is the river immortalized by great poets‚ in particular Antonio Machado‚ Spain's most distinguished landscape poet.
As the Story of the Duero unfolds‚ we shall focus on every aspect of the river - its spectacular landscapes‚ the architecture of its noble cities‚ the winelands‚ its contribution to the history of Spain and Portugal. Following on from this course Chris Pollard and Wayne Bennett will be leading a 4 night Study Tour to The Duero. Weekend Plus available (subject to availability).
