Europe is replete with many great but little known cities. This selection will demonstrate that equally rich histories as well as astonishing cultural treasures can be found away from the familiar ‘honeypot’ city destinations. From origins to the present day the history of each city will be told. Famous (and infamous) inhabitants will be encountered along the way and naturally the architecture, art and music will be explored in some detail.

An ancient city with Celtic beginnings and great British connections thanks to a shared Atlantic seaboard and our enthusiasm for fine wine. Oporto sits astride the Douro River leading to the city’s nickname - the City of Bridges. Portugal’s second city, Oporto’s centre is a World Heritage Site which includes a magnificent Romanesque cathedral. In addition to historic buildings there are many fine modern buildings including a most beautiful synagogue - one of the largest in Europe - and a sensational new concert hall.

This course is part of Week One of the Dillington Summer School. Residents arrive for Tea on Sunday 5 August and depart after breakfast on Saturday 11 August.
