This group of day courses, which will appeal to anyone who has an interest in art, will look at how artists escaped from the big cities and took refuge in the country or by the coast. Artists’ colonies flourished in the nineteenth and early twentieth century in many countries across Europe, and we will concentrate on Britain, France and Denmark. Featured artists will include: Camille Corot, Walter Osborne, Ben Nicholson, Gauguin, Van Gogh, P. S. Krøyer, Michael and Anna Ancher, Stanhope Forbes, Philip Wilson Steer, Eric Ravilious, Vanessa Bell.
Colonies and Retreats: France I
We will look at the earliest art colony at Barbizon. Famous artists included Corot, Millet, Rousseau and Daubigny. A less well known retreat was Cernay-la-Ville, where painters from different countries gathered around the realist Léon Pelouse, who made annual outings with his ‘gang’ to Brittany. Many artists disliked the lack of water at Barbizon, so later moved on to Grez-sur-Loing, on a tributary of the Seine. Including Robert Louis Stephenson, his artist cousin Bob, Walter Osborne and John Lavery from Ireland. The Bostonian Frank Chadwick and his Swedish wife Emma Löwstädt bought one of the inns in the town, making it a mecca for both American and Scandinavian artists. British artists included William Stott of Oldham and Arthur Melville.
This course is part of Week Two of the Dillington Summer School. Residents arrive for Tea on Sunday 12 August and depart after breakfast on Saturday 18 August.
This year was one of the best Summer Schools I have attended.
