More investigations into the private lives of English words. This course is particularly tailored to further the interests of those who enjoyed an introductory ‘What’s In a Word?’ course. Using online resources to research the semantics, interrelationships and origins of a variety of simple and compound words. Developing a variety of word trails, some leading to or from PIE (Proto-IndoEuropean) roots. Subsequent presentations and discussions will be important and interesting parts of the sessions.
Brian Jaques is a retired teacher/scientist interested in words - by necessity and pleasure. He has delivered many courses involving ‘words’ in a wide variety of guises – and has thoroughly enjoyed the participation of like-minded people delving into the private lives and acrobatics of words.Back to List
I love going to Dillington. Where is there like it? Arriving is like a decompression, a deep breath of pure air. The programmes of courses, concerts and talks are exceptional. The company is delightful; the food and the ambiance add to the pleasure; and all set in a magical landscape which seems to me a secret Somerset paradise. In a world of increasing dislocation, Dillington has a real sense of its place in the world.
