We all have painting demons that haunt us. Many artists produce paintings that are “nearly very good”, but are let down repeatedly by the same mistake or mistakes. Being objective about your own work can be difficult, so bring some of your “nearly very good efforts” and together with the tutor you will tackle those aspects that need attention, and hopefully, banish the demons forever. This course is suitable for intermediate and advance students.

Tutor Information

Clare DuVergier

Clare DuVergier is a well-known painter in the South West and lives in a remote area in the Quantock Hills. She trained both as an actress and as a teacher and her first job at the Northcott Theatre in Exeter instilled a great love of the local landscape. In 1990 having followed a number of career paths she returned to the South West and to a full time career in painting in 2000. She has exhibited at a number of galleries in the South West and Scotland and for many years as part of SAW (Somerset Art Week). She is now much in demand as a lively teacher of traditional watercolour. She works primarily with watercolour and occasionally in oils and mixed media. Her paintings are divers and include both figurative and abstract works with a particular interest in colour and light.

I came to Somerset to talk about Socrates and his search for the good life. And in many ways I found it incarnated in Dillington House. Here there is a love of beauty and truth. To find a sympathetic venue with an exquisitely rich history, open to all and encouraging debate, creativity and a passion for life is exactly the kind of thing that would have made Socrates smile. I can't wait to come back. Bettany Hughes
