This is an ensemble course for upper intermediate level recorder players. We shall play as a large conducted ensemble, exploring music in many different styles and from all periods of music from the sixteenth to the twenty first century. The music to be studied will utilise all sizes of recorder, from descant to contrabass. Students are required to have the ability to play in F and C fingerings. The repertoire will include some Renaissance multi-choir pieces along with music by Byrd, Bach, Steve Marshall and others. All music will be provided.
Helen Hooker studied the recorder at Trinity College of Music under Philip Thorby, graduating in 1993 with a first class degree and the Post-Graduate Certificate in performance with distinction. She now combines performing on the recorder with teaching the instrument. Helen particularly enjoys working with adult recorder players. She is Chairperson of the Recorder Summer School and a Musical Advisor and visiting conductor for the Society of Recorder Players. Helen has performed widely on the recorder, both as a soloist and chamber musician, giving regular recitals throughout the UK with The Parnassian Ensemble. Helen’s first solo CD, Helen and Friends, was released to critical acclaim in 2009. Helen has a particular interest in recorder orchestras. She is Musical Director of the Thames Valley Recorder Orchestra and plays with both the Hampshire Recorder Sinfonia and the Phoenix Recorder Orchestra.
