2018 is an apt year to run this course as in 1918 The Planets Suite had its first public performance. The course opens with an illustrated lecture in two parts. Part one Holst’s life from 1874-1905. Part two from 1905-1934. Then the course will look at the first performance of The Planets Suite in 1918. Moving on to explore Holst in Algiers and his Beni Mora Suite. There will be a chance to watch the DVD of the Philharmonia Orchestra’s award winning Universe of Sound and see some contextualised extracts from Tony Palmer’s film about Holst.
This course includes a trip to the Holst Birthplace Museum in Cheltenham.
