Peter Warlock, Frank Bridge, Lord Berners, Gerald Finzi and John Ireland, not forgotten perhaps, but certainly not as celebrated or as highly valued today as they deserve to be. The period from the final decade of the nineteenth century through the first half of the twentieth century was in many ways a golden era for British music. These, and the other composers we shall encounter on this course, were brilliantly gifted, and in some cases wildly eccentric figures, who each made vital contributions to the richness of our musical culture.
This course ends at lunchtime on Sunday after which partcipants will join the audience for public concert by the Coull Quartet, for which your seat will be reserved. Course participants depart after the concert.
Gwyn Parry-Jones has a richly experienced background, both as a performer and a conductor, and has held academic posts at the universities of Oxford, Gothenburg and Reading. At Reading he was, until 2007, the Director of Music in the Faculty of Education, and remains a visiting lecturer at Reading and Oxford Universities. As a professional musician Gwyn worked with the Hallé and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestras, and played under the batons of some of the world's greatest conductors, including Sir John Barbirolli, Carlo-Maria Giulini and Sir Simon Rattle. Gwyn is also well known as an adjudicator, and has this year again been a Mentor at the National Festival of Music for Youth in Birmingham’s Symphony Hall. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and an Honorary Fellow of the University of Reading. Gwyn has a number of published compositions and arrangements too, mostly for wind instruments or voices.Back to List
As a film-maker, I travel the world but few places offer such repose, intellectual stimulation and comfort. I can't wait to come back. My hat is most certainly off to all the hard-working team at Dillington. Their commitment to high quality service and programme innovation is truly remarkable. I thoroughly recommend it!
