This year’s course examines industrial archaeology in two nearby areas of Somerset and Devon through lectures and field visits. The first visit explores the Somerset Moors beside the River Parrett, with tours of the Westonzoyland pumping engine and steam collection, and a willow basket making operation. The second visit is to Axminster, for a tour of the working carpet factory, followed by much more down to the sea at Seaton. Everyone is welcome but please be aware that outdoor walking is involved and some indoor visits include steps. No previous knowledge needed.
Peter Stanier BA, MSc, PhD is a lecturer and writer, who is well known for his work in industrial archaeology. He has written a number of books and papers on aspects of the industrial heritage of Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire. Peter has tutored industrial archaeology courses at Dillington House for the past ten years.Back to List
I came to Somerset to talk about Socrates and his search for the good life. And in many ways I found it incarnated in Dillington House. Here there is a love of beauty and truth. To find a sympathetic venue with an exquisitely rich history, open to all and encouraging debate, creativity and a passion for life is exactly the kind of thing that would have made Socrates smile. I can't wait to come back.
