Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story from 1892 is a powerful exploration of the position of women at the end of the nineteenth century. Seen by many as a condemnation of a patriarchal society and of a male dominated medical profession this story remains relevant. This course will explore the powerful language and imagery in this story and its contemporary social and medical context.
