This course, covering the period from the fourth to the ninth centuries will explore emergence of a specifically West European identity following the collapse of the Roman Empire in the West. There will be an emphasis on the interaction between religious, cultural and political developments and an exploration of how far modern concepts of a European identity have their origins in the historical processes that followed the end of the Roman Empire.
Richard Henderson has an MA from Bristol University. His research interests focus around the ideological and historical origins of the Holy Roman Empire, the transition from the Antique to the medieval world, and late Antique cities. He worked for many years as a town planner and now runs classes in medieval history for adults and also organises cultural tours to European citiesBack to List
