Military Historian in residence, Brigadier (Ret’d) Mike Shaw, continues his series of day courses entitled “ News from the Fronts” covering events of the Great War exactly one hundred years after their occurrence. The series comprises standalone day courses and is delivered at a frequency of about one day course every two months throughout the centenary period. All sessions are self-contained and courses may be attended individually or as a series.
By late Spring 1918 the Kaiser’s armies appeared everywhere triumphant. In the East the implosion of Russia had led to the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk and the sequestration of the Ukraine into the German war effort. In the West Operations Michael, Georgette and latterly Blucher had broken the mould of trench warfare and got within artillery range of Paris. Yet the Allies still hung on, now under the unifying command of Generalissimo Foch. But the offensives had cost all parties dear, none more so than the young men of the German Storm Divisions. Meanwhile the German Home Front was reduced to starvation rations. The course will consider the reasons why May-June proved to be the tipping point in the war.
Mike’s military history courses are on the following dates:
18 July, 5 September, 21 October, 6 January, 17 March & 22 May.
