Nefertari was queen to the 19th Dynasty megalomaniac pharaoh Ramesses II, so she is overshadowed in the historical record often quite literally by his colossal statues. In this course we will explore a varied range of sources including inscriptions, paintings and statuary, to find out all we can about this important ancient Egyptian queen of the 13th Century BC. We will focus on her surviving monuments, and will explore particularly her temple at Abu Simbel, built by Ramesses II in her honour, and dedicated to the goddess Hathor. A focus of the day will be her exquisitely decorated rock-cut tomb in the Valley of the Queens is considered by many to be the most stunning of all ancient Egyptian burial places. In this course we shall make a detailed study of the tomb’s discovery, design and colourful scenes adorning the walls.
