This course covers the history of British retailing from the markets of the Middle ages to the supermarkets and shopping malls of the twentieth century. It tells the story of how shopping turned into a leisure activity in the Georgian and Victorian periods, how shops evolved to suit changing needs, how retailing turned into big business thanks to the flair of pioneers like Jesse Boot the chemist and John James Sainsbury the grocer, and how high streets were transformed by supermarkets and department stores.

Philip Wilkinson is the author of many books on architecture and history. He wrote a series of books to accompany the BBC2's series Restoration and Restoration Village, and is the author of The English Buildings Book (published by English Heritage) and Fifty Architecture Ideas You Really Need To Know (Quercus). When not writing, he explores buildings ceaselessly, recording some of his discoveries on his blog (englishbuildings.blogspot.co.uk) and gives talks on architectural subjects.Back to List
