Europe is replete with many great but little known cities. This selection will demonstrate that equally rich histories as well as astonishing cultural treasures can be found away from the familiar ‘honeypot’ city destinations. From origins to the present day the history of each city will be told. Famous (and infamous) inhabitants will be encountered along the way and naturally the architecture, art and music will be explored in some detail.
Home of Europe’s oldest university whose students included Dante, Boccaccio and Petrarch. The city is a great culinary centre too extending far beyond the delight of Tagliatelle alla Bolognese! Bugatti was founded in Bologna and Ducati are still headquartered there. Sons of the city include Respighi, Marconi, Pasolini and the actor Rossano Brazzi.
This course is part of Week One of the Dillington Summer School. Residents arrive for Tea on Sunday 5 August and depart after breakfast on Saturday 11 August.
