Dorset’s ‘Isle of Purbeck’ is one of the most beautiful landscapes in England, yet it is also a paradise for archaeologists and historians of all periods. This course examines its rich history, geology and archaeology. Themes range from the Jurassic Coast to prehistoric barrows, Romans, medieval fields, Corfe Castle, to WW2 military. Industrial sites include, marble, limestone and ‘cliff stone’ quarries, limekilns, salt and shale workings, ball clay mines, tramways, railways, bricks and Swanage with its curious monuments of John Mowlem and George Burt.
Peter Stanier BA, MSc, PhD is a lecturer and writer, who is well known for his work in industrial archaeology. He has written a number of books and papers on aspects of the industrial heritage of Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire. Peter has tutored industrial archaeology courses at Dillington House for the past ten years.
