From Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Elizabeth Siddal, to Lord Frederick Leighton and Dorothy Dene, the work of many Victorian artists was influenced by their models, many of whom became their muses, mistresses or wives. In this course we will investigate the often complex relationships between Victorian artists and their models and celebrate the spectacular works of art resulting from these relationships.
Following a degree in Biochemistry and Physiology, Peter Bryden qualified as a doctor and practiced as a GP in Hastings until 2010. Wishing to further his interest in the History of Art he enrolled at Birkbeck College, University of London, and was awarded an MA in History of Art in 2012. He specialises in Victorian Art and wrote his dissertation on Social Realist Art and the 'Victorian Poverty Industry'.Back to List
