Recently described as 'the most exciting city in Europe', much has changed in Madrid in the last twelve years. This Course explores the history of Madrid from its first years under the Moors, through its emergence as Hapsburg capital, its rebuilding by the Spanish Bourbons, the invasion by Napoleon, to the twentieth century when it was battered by the Civil War and forty years of repression before emerging as a glittering city of art, culture and gastronomy. We shall peruse the treasures of all the great museums including the wonderful Sorolla House. We shall walk through the most extensive sixteenth century City district in Europe. We shall listen to Zarzuela and pay a brief visit to Madrid's two centres of popular culture: the Bull-ring and the Real Madrid Stadium.
Following on from this Course Chris Pollard and Wayne Bennett will be leading a 4 night Study Tour to Madrid details below:
Sunday 11 – Thursday 15 March
In conjunction with Chris Pollard's weekend Course ' The Story of Madrid', Christopher Pollard Tours is delighted to offer a four-night Study Tour: 'Madrid Adventure'. Madrid is a lovely city in the Spring and the Tour will embrace incomparable art and architecture as well the social and culinary delights that inspired a recent Travel Writer to describe it as “the most exciting city in Europe”. Our programme will include visits to the three great galleries (the Prado, Thyssen and Reina Sofia), the wonderful Lazaro Galdiano (the Spanish Wallace Collection) and the Sorolla House-Museum. We shall explore the extensive Hapsburg District and have a tour of the Opera House. We visit the city's 21st century architecture and have dinner in one of Madrid's new-style Haute Cuisine restaurants. We will depart from Dillington after lunch on Sunday 11th March and drive to Bristol Airport, arriving early evening. We then have four full days in Madrid before taking our return flight in the evening of 15th March. Accommodation will be in a central 3-star hotel.
The cost of this tour is £1190 (single supplement of £90 if applicable). This includes flights, all transfers in the UK and Spain and all-inclusive tour (including wine and drinks with meals). Full details can be obtained from Christopher Pollard Tours, tel: (01823) 286097, email: firstname.lastname@example.org. Bookings and enquiries for this Study Tour should be made directly with Christopher Pollard Tours.

I had a wonderful afternoon at Dillington House - exactly the sort of audience that authors hope for when speaking about their books. The questions were not only well informed but enabled me to fill in the gaps left by my original talk. I look forward to going back.
