Beginning with the Hudson River Group and the American sublime, we look in depth at the Ashcan School of Painters in New York at the beginning of the twentieth century. We then concentrate on featured artists including Georgia O’Keeffe and Edward Hopper, and also examine the art of the 1930s, featuring the American Regionalists exemplified by Grant Wood’s iconic ‘American Gothic’. The course will include the photography of such luminaries as Walker Evans and Lee Miller, and the blockbuster films of the 1930s such as ‘Grand Hotel’ and ‘It Happened One Night’.

Dr Jan D. Cox 

Dr. Jan D. Cox was awarded a PhD in History of Art from the University of Leeds in 2014, where he specialised in nineteenth-century Nordic art. He shares his interests between this topic and British art of the early twentieth century. He graduated from Oxford Brookes University in 2005, where he was awarded the Jeanne Sheehy Memorial Prize for his work on Christopher Wood. His MA at Bristol focused on followers of Christopher Wood such as the Neo-Romantics John Minton and Keith Vaughan.
