Through studying the collaboration between philanthropist Thomas Coram, artist William Hogarth and composer George Frideric Handel at the Foundling Hospital, we will experience a slice right through mid-eighteenth century London society and culture. Not only effectively Britain’s first children's charity, it was also its first public art gallery, paving the way for the rapid expansion of exhibition spaces which followed.
In its commitment to the arts and to broader and even peripheral aspects of culture, Dillington House is a beacon of enlightenment in a world of increasing sameness, mediocrity and uncritical acceptance. And there is much to be said for the home cooking too. I unhesitatingly commend it to all who are still intellectually alert.
