We will be focusing on the period roughly 1890-1920 which saw an outpouring of highly charged, very emotional and supposedly more ‘realistic’ operas from Italian composers such as Leoncavallo, Mascagni, Cilea, Zandonai and Giordano. Strong passions and stirring melodies course through these works, providing us with some of the most dramatic and memorable scenes in opera.
Is Reader in Law, University of Bristol, where he taught for 42 years before retiring in 2007. He was awarded the University Teaching Prize in 2005 for outstanding contribution to teaching and is author of two widely used undergraduate law textbooks: Textbook on Roman Law ; Textbook on Succession (both OUP). Andrew was a Continuing Education Tutor in the Bristol University Music Department for many years, specialising in Italian opera, and also tutoring on the Undergraduate BA Music course. He has also been giving opera talks for the last 33 years to many music and arts societies, as well as to the branches of the Friends of Welsh National Opera and pre-performance talks for WNO. He is the National Chairman of the WNO Friends (twice) and has been Chairman of the Bristol WNO Friends three times.Back to List
It is rare to find a venue - and an audience - so thoroughly dedicated to the enjoyment culture and cultivation of the mind as Dillington House and its visitors. As someone who hasn't lived in Britain for the past two decades, Dillington was also a delightful reminder of the beauties of English landscape and rural architecture. It was a pleasure to speak there and I envy those who can visit frequently.
