The South West of England can justifiably lay claim to the most famous and arguably oldest monastic foundation in the British Isles – Glastonbury. This region, as with everywhere else in Britain, saw between five hundred and a thousand years of ecclesiastical history, art, architecture, design and a whole way of life, ruthlessly swept away between 1536 and 1539. We will look at what happened to the dozens of sites across the region. It was also this region that saw the first signs of a revival and the region continues to maintain a link between the glorious medieval monastic history and the current legacy, through such abbeys as Buckfast and Downside. The course will include two full day visits to important sites in the region.

There will be a supplement of £90 for this course for residents towards the cost of transport and entrance fees.

This course is part of Week Two of the Dillington Summer School. Residents arrive for Tea on Sunday 12 August and depart after breakfast on Saturday 18 August.
