From picturesque timber-framed houses to great monuments like St Paul's Cathedral, Tudor and Stuart architecture is some of the most impressive in England. This course looks at the full spectrum, including yeoman's houses, vast mansions like Longleat and Burghley, stunning university buildings, and the grandiose and sometimes bizarre churches of Nicholas Hawksmoor.
Philip Wilkinson is the author of many books on architecture and history. He wrote a series of books to accompany the BBC2's series Restoration and Restoration Village, and is the author of The English Buildings Book (published by English Heritage) and Fifty Architecture Ideas You Really Need To Know (Quercus). When not writing, he explores buildings ceaselessly, recording some of his discoveries on his blog (englishbuildings.blogspot.co.uk) and gives talks on architectural subjects.Back to List Make Booking Enquiry
It is rare to find a venue - and an audience - so thoroughly dedicated to the enjoyment culture and cultivation of the mind as Dillington House and its visitors. As someone who hasn't lived in Britain for the past two decades, Dillington was also a delightful reminder of the beauties of English landscape and rural architecture. It was a pleasure to speak there and I envy those who can visit frequently.
