Singing with others is an exhilarating and liberating experience that everybody can enjoy. Singings for Larks workshops, run by Faith Watson, are based on the tradition of learning songs by ear. This approach makes the joy of singing with others easily accessible to those who are new to singing, whilst offering more experienced singers the opportunity to develop their aural skills.
On this Jazz and Swing Harmonies weekend we shall be exploring the kind of complex, close harmonies found in British and American popular music of the 1920s, 30s and 40s. We may sing some standards from this period, unexpected songs that have been given the jazz or swing treatment and songs that have been created purely for these workshops. Some of the melodies may be familiar and therefore fairly quick to pick up, but the harmony parts tend to take longer to learn and can offer a challenge even to experienced acapella singers. Expect a swinging weekend of tantalizing melodies, crunchy harmonies and fiendish rhythms.
A HISTORY OF SINGING FOR LARKS 1996 – 2018
Faith has enjoyed singing for as long as she can remember – around the family home as well as in school and church choirs. Her particular love of unaccompanied harmony singing really got going, however, when she became a member of Strange Company, a Manchester based women’s acapella group, in 1987. Although they mainly sang for fun in each other’s kitchens, Strange Company periodically performed to great acclaim during their 12 years together.
In 1988, Faith set up a Harmony Singing evening class in Manchester and from this sprang further regular, short term and one-off workshops in the North West. Then in 1994, Janet Mitchell (a member of the evening class who’d had no previous singing experience) became so inspired by the accessibility and fun of Faith’s approach to harmony singing that she came up with the idea of Singing Weekend Breaks. She wanted to combine the joy of group singing with good food (her own passion) and beautiful surroundings. Together, Janet and Faith set up Singing for Larks Harmony Singing Weekends, and the first weekend break was held at Whaley Hall in June 1996. Since then, One-Day workshops, Short Breaks and Skills Training have been added to the mix and, since 1999, Faith has run Singing for Larks as a full time occupation.
Faith is a member of the Natural Voice Network. She leads regular harmony singing groups in Greater Manchester and one-off sessions throughout the country for other singing groups and choirs. Groups she has worked with include: Resonance, Lincolnshire; Singing Together York; Whitwell Community Choir Derbyshire; Bishop Grossteste University Lincoln; Sing in Herts Hertfordshire; The Amblesingers Ambleside; Harmonise Edinburgh; Loudmouth Women, Stoke on Trent: Bel Canto, Macclesfield; Chechelele, York. Further afield, Faith has been running workshops at the Helsinki University Summer School in Finland since 2004 and she has run natural voice singing holidays for the activity holiday company Authentic Adventures in: Italy, Spain, Morocco, India, Malta, Cuba, Madeira, Bulgaria, Romania, Sri Lanka, Montenegro and Croatia.
Faith has also been commissioned to lead singing workshops by organisations with a specific social and health focus, including: Back on Track, Manchester; Winged Fellowship Holidays; NHS Trusts; McMillan cancer relief in Draperstown, Northern Ireland; and by public and private organisations that want to take a creative approach to team building, including: Liverpool University; Various Schools in Trafford; Weightwatchers UK; Harvest Housing Association; Vistage CEO and Executive Training.
Faith writes and arranges acapella songs, not just for her own open-access workshops, but also for a variety of performance groups and for professional theatre.
With her years of experience, and her popular approach, Faith has gained a reputation as a trainer and, since 2003, Faith has run training courses and individual and group mentoring for new and experienced workshop leaders, for those who want to take a greater role in their singing group and for people who want to develop their skills in arranging songs for acapella. She has delivered training for the University of Central Lancashire and for Nordoff Robbins music therapy students.
Having performed with the acapella groups: Strange Company and The Lindows, she is now a member of: The Lovenotes with Jules Gibb, Katherine Watson and Rose Hodgson. They often perform with jazz / blues singer, Helen Watson (popular surname!). They have recorded 5 CDs.
At the heart of all Faith’s work there remains a love of acapella singing and the belief that everyone, no matter what their level of skill, confidence or experience, can enjoy the thrill of singing in harmony.
The trust and confidence that Faith inspires means that your first experience of Singing for Larks is rarely your last.
