Jane Austen was greatly attached to her novels, ‘Sense and Sensibility’ and ‘Emma’. Her heroine in ‘Emma’ she described as a character ‘whom none but myself may like’. She likened her relationship with ‘Sense and Sensibility’ to a mother and a ‘suckling child’. Learn about how Austen crafted these heroines and spot traces of her novels in her letters and life, consider how vital debates relating to gender, social class, education and marriage in the eighteenth century were represented in these iconic novels. This course explores ‘Emma’ and ‘Sense and Sensibility’ through the medium of lectures and group discussion. You will finish the course with a greater understanding of the novels and the context in which this famous writer wrote. Be inspired by the writer who has become the face of the £10 note. If you love reading and have always wanted to know more about why ‘Emma’ and ‘Sense and Sensibility’ have such a prized place in English Literature, this is the course for you.
