Europe is replete with many great but little known cities. This selection will demonstrate that equally rich histories as well as astonishing cultural treasures can be found away from the familiar ‘honeypot’ city destinations. From origins to the present day the history of each city will be told. Famous (and infamous) inhabitants will be encountered along the way and naturally the architecture, art and music will be explored in some detail.

Heidelberg
The city of Romberg’s Student Prince, picturesque Heidelberg is on the Necker River and home to Germany’s most ancient university and an enviable collection of Baroque buildings. Unlike many Germany cites, Heidelberg had no strategic significance during World War Two and therefore escaped Allied bombing despite being an enthusiastic centre of National Socialism before and during the war.

This course is part of Week One of the Dillington Summer School. Residents arrive for Tea on Sunday 5 August and depart after breakfast on Saturday 11 August.
