It has been a mad few weeks. I suppose it all started with the Diamond Jubilee weekend when nearly a hundred people celebrated the great event with a splendid lunch followed by a big screen viewing of the River Pageant. This was immediately followed our Czech-fest. Four outstanding concerts by Prague’s finest – The Wihan Quartet – all eruditely introduced by the eminent musicologist, Angus Watson. Amidst all of this were the final amendments for the new programme which is now at the printers. And then to end the madness we concluded with a weekend of Viking mayhem! Three university professors and other experts took us on a journey across time and space conjuring up a world of opportunity, violence, immigration and assimilation. Alfred’s success, in part, was due to his mobility. The Vikings didn’t really have a target to fight and so a war could not be won. There seemed a modern day parable in that.
